About
I started singing in my home church, Bethel A.M.E Church in Stamford, Connecticut at the age of eight. I grew up singing with the intermediate choirs and traveled along the east coast to various churches and programs. In 1977, I met and married my husband, Ken Covell, an accomplished latin percussionist, whose credits include working with Carlos Santana, Bonnie Raitt and 1950’s icon, Big Joe Turner. In 1988, our first trip abroad while on a vacation, my husband and I combined piano and vocals ( for drinks) at the Club L’Utopie in Port Cogolin, St. Tropez, France for several nights Then we moved on to London where I sat-in at the Bill Bentley 30 Jazz Club in the Chelsea section. Upon our move to Richmond, Virginia, in 1992, I felt ready to pursue a serious jazz career. I sat-in and performed with seasoned players in my area. In September, 2001, on a cruise, I met and had the pleasure of sitting-in with the house pianist/vocalist, Mr. Stacy MacAdams on the Crown Odyssey Cruise Lines. Several days later, I sat-in at the Divani Rooftop Hotel in Athens, Greece. I started my local jazz gigs with the Richmond Jazz Society Annual Vocal Showcase on December 10, 2002. During that summer of 2002, while on vacation, I sat-in at a Monmartre Coffee house in Paris at noon and later that evening, sat-in with featured vocalist, Anne-Marie Godart at the Hotel Concord Lafayette. In July, 2003, I returned and sat-in again for the jazz pianist on the Crown Odyssey Cruise, while he took the midnight breaks. The music continued through the years to the present as I am adding nursing homes, country clubs, hotels, local and tri-city restaurants, city and civic events to my client base.
